The upcoming Michael Jackson biopic Michael will compete in the drama category at the 2027 Golden Globe Awards, despite its strong connection to music and the singer’s legendary career.
The decision follows a review by the Golden Globes, which determined that the film does not qualify for the Musical or Comedy category under its eligibility rules. Lionsgate had originally submitted the movie for consideration as a musical.
The distinction centers on how music functions within a film. To qualify as a musical, songs generally need to advance the story rather than simply appear as performances.
Directed by Antoine Fuqua, Michael stars Jaafar Jackson, the singer’s nephew, in the title role. The film explores Jackson’s life, career, and rise to global fame.
The classification also places Jaafar Jackson in the drama category for potential acting recognition.
Lionsgate can appeal the decision ahead of the awards season.
Nominations for the 2027 Golden Globes are scheduled to be announced on December 7, 2026, with the ceremony set for January 10, 2027.
