It’s the Super Bowl of Pumpkin weigh offs! The Safeway World Championship Pumpkin Weigh-Off was held on October 8th in Half Moon Bay, California. Half Moon Bay is called the world pumpkin capitol.
Supermarket chain Safeway, which sponsors the event, increased the maximum prize to $30,000 in 2015. To qualify for the top prize, competitors have to produce a wold record pumpkin. This year, that means producing one heavier than the 2,600 pound pumpkin which broke the previous world record at the Giant Pumpkin European Championship in 2016. If the heaviest pumpkin weights less, the owner gets $7 per pound, which still adds up to thousands of dollars in cash.
This years winner was Steve Daletas, who took home the top prize of $15,190 with a 2,170 lb pumpkin. Daletas credits his prize winner to a special seed, lots of care, and lots of sunshine. While he won the tournament, he didn’t set the wold record or even scare the US record of 2,500 lbs set last month in New Hampshire.
