RB/Bauer-Griffin/GC ImagesWe now have our first taste of Avril Lavigne‘s first new music in three years.
The Canadian star posted a snippet of her new single “Head Above Water” on her socials. The dramatic piano ballad features Avril singing, “I’ve gotta keep the calm before the storm/I don’t want less, I don’t want more/ Must bar the windows and the doors/ To keep me safe, to keep me warm.”
As previously reported, Avril posted a lengthy letter to her fans on her website in which she described how happy she is to be putting out new music after a years-long battle with Lyme Disease that left her bedridden. She also revealed how she wrote “Head Above Water” during “one of the scariest moments of my life.”
“I had accepted death and could feel my body shutting down,” she wrote. “I felt like I was drowning. Like I was going under water and I just needed to come up for air. Like I was in a river being pulled in a current. Unable to breathe. Praying to God for Him to help me just keep my head above the water. To help me see through the stormy weather.”
She continued, “I grew closer to Him. My mother held me. In her arms, I wrote the first song that I am releasing to tell my story.”
“Head Above Water” will be released September 19. There’s no release date yet for Avril’s new album.
